This mural was originally painted by Frederick “Freddie” Colin Ayers, who was a painter and made his living as a commercial artist, creating signs for many local businesses and painting company names on their vehicles.
Born 1 November 1901 in England, Freddie was the son of Charles Ayres and Ellen French. In 1923, he married Mildred May Horsepool. They made their home and raised a family in Paudash. An avid member of Bancroft’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 181, Freddie passed away on 3 May 1979.
In the 1990s, Freddie’s mural was restored and mounted on the outside corner of the Legion building where it has been enjoyed for decades, before succumbing to the elements. Thanks to the digital skills of Dr. Henrik Christiansen, a family physician, artist and accomplished photographer, the mural has once again been restored to its original glory.
